I love the Barringer rig. I've modified it to accommodate my trapping style.
We make the stakes out of straight oak limbs, 20"x1 1/2"x2". Drill two holes 3/4" from the top for the wire. Then another hole 5 inches from the top for the snare. We don't attach the snare to directly to the stake though. We attach a 6"-8" piece of scrap cable with a sterling swivel. This is where we attach the snare.
Our snares I think are 30", just large enough to make an 8" loop. We load the snare also. This results in very few hip caught coon. Also with the short snare the trails aren’t ruined in 2-3 catches.
As to coon chewing the stake apart, it has never happened to use in 4 years of using this method. They might chew the top a little, but most time is spent at the edges of the catch circle away from the stake.
